While reading through a Korean book on traditional martial arts, I ran across a brief description of a hwarang legend that I thought I would translate and post. Like all good legends, it's slightly fucked up.
Hwang Ch'ang-nang was a Shilla person. When he was seven years old, he entered the Paekche kingdom and performed the sword dance in the city, and apparently the people who saw him spread stories of his performance. The king of Paekche heard these stories and commanded that the boy be brought before him to perform his sword dance. Ch'ang-nang seized the opportunity and stabbed the king. For this, the people of Paekche killed Ch'ang-nang. The people of Shilla remember him with grief and performed the sword dance wearing a mask that is based upon his face.
