New statistics on crime rates for women in Korea

An article about a recent report about the rising proportion of women prosecuted by the Ministry of Justice in Korea, with the proposed narrative that these women are suffering poverty and only commit crimes to feed their children.

OECD says, Koreans ought to marry more, have more babies, and vote more often.

Not necessarily in that order.

The low rate of voter turnout is pretty surprising. The low birthrates and marriage rates, not so much.

Original from the Maeil Kyongjae.

Korea, 39% bachelor rate is OECD's highest
46% Voter turnout rate in parliamentary elections is the bottom

A survey found that among the 34 member nations of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the nation with the lowest voter turnout during National Assembly elections is Korea.

Smartphones bad for your love life

More evidence that app developers are ruining our lives. Screw you, Jose!

While I wouldn't call it a scientific survey, or one that is in any way statistically rigorous, this definitely is an indication that people need to unplug a little bit more. I know, I'm the last one to criticize, but seriously? Choosing your dating spots based on wifi access? Y'all need help!

It makes me glad I can't afford a smartphone. Take that, yuppy consumerist bastards!

Arirang is a nice song, but best song ever?

That's pretty funny, but the Ethics class textbooks are known for employing quite a bit of patriotic hyperbole. They make up a very small portion of the curriculum, though.

Nude big-breasted Korean women -- It's art!

Because I can't let an article about breast size pass by. And they say that Korea is a straitlaced, conservative country.

The play is running in Taehakro, our old stompin' grounds.

Original ran in the Segye Ilbo.

"The professor and the female student"'s F-cup Yang So-yon, not a single hair. . .

2010 teen sex survey results: Koreans still throwing troubled teens under the bus

Nothing particularly surprising in the survey results. Typical teens are not having sex, but they are consuming internet porn. 'Crisis teens', who are apparently teens who have been institutionalized, and are probably from broken homes, are a small minority who are heavily exploited by the local sex industry.

The article does not break the statistics down by sex, which I find curious and worth exploring. I'll try to dig into the actual report, at some time. I'm particularly curious to see what the report says about alternate sexualities.

C is for Coffee that's good enough for me

NY Times has an article about the recent move of coffee hipsters towards japanese hand-pour products.

What really drew my attention was the last sentence: "Already, a few of the same people who once traveled to Tokyo and Kyoto are now talking and posting on Twitter about a country that draws on a variety of traditions, an emerging coffee culture that might also have something to teach us: Korea."

I’m going to Columbia, and I owe it to Jon Huer.

So there I was, doing my midnight browsing on the internets. I knew I needed sleep, I knew I was tired. But as we all know, you’re never too tired to read a few more headlines or browse through a few more of your friend’s pictures on Facebook.

And then something caught my eye, a name. Facebook in its omniscient magic suggested I add Jon Huer as a friend. Jon Huer, Jon Huer, I thought. Why does that name seem so familiar? It was time for a bit of techno-savvy investigation. It was time to google Jon Huer, and boy was I surprised about the results.

I'm trying to stay in the habit of posting something, so here's more random martial arts and history stuff.
