Entertainment blog PopSeoul! published a list of the Top Ten K Movies of All Time (six through ten and five through one). The list is . . . unsurprising. If you're a moderate fan of K culture, you've probably already seen them.
[There are a few I haven't seen yet, but that's just because I'm stubborn.]
All of them were released in the past ten years, are fairly accessible, and have made the rounds on the international film festival circuit.
But, seriously, the film industry in Korea predates 1995. It really had a rennaissance lately, it is true, but I'd like to see a nod to the past included in a list that self-proclaims itself to be ALL TIME GREATEST. How about mentioning the colonial era attempts to adapt Korean traditional stories to the new media? How about a nod to the dictatorship-era directors who stretched their meager resources and harsh supervision to tell the truth within the confines of the strict censorship laws?
My new project: compile a pre-democracy top ten film list.
