Leading scholar on Chinese passed on recently.

I hadn't heard about this at all, but apparently he's in my department (although a different language, of course). At any rate, it sounds like his loss is a tragedy to Asian area studies.

EDIT: Also, they're apparently planning a US remake of 친절한 금자씨. I'm pretty agnostic regarding remakes, and this film has a lot of angles to explore in different ways. I expect an American remake will avoid the international adoption subplot and play up the prison story aspect, which could be cool.

I've always enjoyed action films, particularly martial arts movies, and lately I've been getting back to the origins of the genre, with the spaghetti westerns ("Django" really stands out) and 60's movies like "Billy Jack" (which is . . . indescribable).

Laying down the law.

When conversing with those of my small town community, I find that the only resolution seems to be an altercation. I don’t mean necessarily that I always want to fight someone when I meet them, but the more important matter is the protection of my family. I recently had the privilege of meeting with some coworkers of my youngest sister. I made it abundantly clear to them that their best interest would be to insure the safety and comfort of my sister.
